Supplies Needed
To create your DIY Gnome Valentine Box, you’ll need the following materials:
- 1 box
- 1 piece craft fur for beard
- 1 Valentine-themed scarf
- 1 pom pom
- 1 wooden knob or wooden bead
- 1 pack felt hearts
Many supplies for this easy Valentine’s Day box can be found at Dollar Tree. I got the bandana, felt hearts, and pom-pom from the dollar store. The craft fur came from Jo-Anns, which was 50% off then, so be sure to watch for their sales or use a coupon to save money on it because, at regular prices, it can be a little expensive. This small piece was under $5, though.
This is one of those DIY projects where you can use what you have on hand. I used a White Valentine Box from Hobby Lobby because I got it for a few dollars on sale, but you can use whatever box you have at home — it can be a cereal boxes, shoe boxes, gift boxes, etc. If you have fabric scraps, you can use them instead of the bandana for the gnome’s hat. You can choose whatever embellishments you want in place of the felt hearts, such as little pom poms, glitter heart stickers, etc. Plus, you can just make a large pom-pom out of yarn to save money.
Instructions to Make the Gnome Valentine Box
- Measure the box and cut out a piece of craft fur the appropriate size
- Wrap the fur around the box and glue it down with hot glue.
- Fold the bandana in half and wrap it around the box. Glue each end of the bandana to either side of the back of the box.
- Glue on the pom-pom and wooden knob.
- Attach the heart stickers to the gnome hat for added decoration. Feel free to add your own unique embellishments and customizations — that’s the fun part of this project!

DIY Gnome Valentine Box for Kids
Equipment
- 1 pair of fabric scissors
- 1 hot glue gun
- 1 glue stick
- marker
Materials
- 1 box
- 1 piece craft fur for beard size will depend on the size of your box
- 1 scarf, scrap fabric, etc. for hat Mine is a Dollar Tree bandana
- 1 pom pom for hat accessory
- 1 wooden knob or wooden bead for the nose
- 1 pack felt hearts for hat decorations You can get these at the Dollar Tree
Instructions
- Measure the size of your box, trace an outline of that size on the back of your craft fur with a marker, and cut it out. I made my gnome's beard about 1/2 of the box's height, but you can do more or less to suit your preferences.
- Using your hot glue gun, glue the fur all the way around the box. I put a thick line of glue on the box where the top of the fur is. Hold it in place for about 10 seconds or until dry.
- If you are using a bandana for the gnome's hat like I am, then fold it in half to make a triangle and wrap the two bottom ends around the top half of the box. Use hot glue to glue the scarf in place at the back of the box.
- Glue on your pom-pom of choice to the top of the hat.
- Attach felt heart stickers or whatever embellishments that you choose on the hat for decoration.
- Glue the wooden knob or bead to the center of the gnome just below the hat.
